Myth: Major oil companies own a majority of gas stations.
Fact: In 2009, there were 162,350 retail gasoline outlets in the United Sates, including low volume retailers such as marinas. Despite a canopy promoting a specific brand of gasoline, less than 2% of these stations are owned and operated by major oil companies, but rather independent entrepreneurs, of which 56% own one station.
